Hemp oil

Hemp is a plant. It is a plant species similar to cannabis. But unlike cannabis, hemp has very low levels of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), less than 0.3%.  US It is legal to sell cannabis and cannabis products in the U.S. The flowers, leaves, seeds, seed oil and protein of hemp are used as food and/or medicine.

Hemp is used for constipation, high cholesterol, eczema (atopic dermatitis), arthritis, and other conditions, but there is no good scientific evidence to support these uses.

Hemp is used to make textiles, cosmetics, rope, printer ink, wood preservatives, detergents, soaps and mild oils.

Don't confuse hemp with Canadian hemp, cannabis cultivar, hemp, or cannabidiol (CBD).

How does this work?

Hemp seeds contain fat, protein and other chemicals. The fat in hemp seeds may help reduce swelling (inflammation). Certain chemicals in hemp seeds help promote bowel movements and lower blood pressure.

Hemp oil may refer to a full-spectrum oil from the Cannabis sativa plant or hemp seed oil, which is oil that comes from just the seeds of the cannabis plant.

The risk of intoxication from hemp oil is very low because all types of hemp come from strains of the edible grain of hemp. The authors of a study in the Journal of Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research note that edible-cereal strains of cannabis should contain less than 0.3 percent tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). THC is the compound that causes the so-called "high" of marijuana.

Hemp oil is not the same as cannabidiol (CBD) oil. CBD oil production uses the stalks, leaves, and flowers of the cannabis plant, which contain high concentrations of CBD, another potentially beneficial compound in the plant.

Hemp seed oil comes from the tiny seeds of the Cannabis sativa plant. The seeds do not contain the same level of compounds as the plant, but they still have a rich profile of nutrients, fatty acids and useful bioactive compounds.

Full-spectrum hemp oil that also contains the plant substance may combine other effective compounds, which may help with certain health problems, such as inflammation.

Hemp seed oil is highly nutritious and can be especially helpful for the skin.

The vitamins and fatty acids present in this oil can help keep the skin healthy and prevent breakouts.

A 2014 study looking at the lipid profile of hemp seed oil found it to be rich in healthy oils and fatty acids.

The abundance of fatty acids can make the oil an excellent choice for nourishing the skin and protecting it from inflammation, oxidation, and other causes of aging.

The authors of a 2014 review from Trusted Sources note that topical application of hemp seed oil tightens the skin and makes it better able to resist infection. The authors also suggest that hemp seed oil may be a helpful treatment for a number of skin problems, including:

  • Itching
  • dermatitis
  • Psoriasis
  • varicose eczema
  • lichen planus, an inflammatory skin condition
  • acne

These benefits are likely due to the high amount of beneficial fats and other helpful compounds in the oil.
